Last March, following the devastating aftermath of the Japanese earthquake, an unlikely friendship was formed. When this chick’s mother hen died of radiation poisoning from the crippled Shokohama Nuclear Reactor, she was left to fend for herself. Daisake, the St. Bernard was separated from his human family when the ground floor of their house was washed away by the tsunami. In a stride of outstanding dog heroism, Daisake rescued the frail, orphaned chick from the shattered shores of Toyo-Toyo.Daisake nursed the chick back to full health and the two could be seen playing together in the clouds of nuclear ash and rummaging through trash for food. They were taken in by a local shop owner who had witnessed this growing friendship.Two days later, the local shop owner forgot to feed Daisake when he went to work and the St. Bernard ate the chick while in his absence. A memorial service will be held in her honor this Sunday.
